Here is a fantastically produced paperback, at a very reasonable price that makes good reading for anyone interested in stained glass.

It is largely historical, covering many elements of how stained glass developed up to 1930, with lavish example illustrations. Areas covered are window panels as well as lamps and other early alternate uses of stained glass. Lots to inspire both professionals and amateurs, alike..

It looks to me to be a great reference book for placing stained glass in certain periods or influences, but also great for ideas and ways to produce an authentic result with a new project.

A wonderful gift for the stained glass artist who has everything.

A Gallery of Suncatchers

This book really works for me as it is the FIRST stained glass suncatcher book I have seen that gives patterns for really good designs, but never requires more than 11 pieces of glass.

That to me is what suncatchers are about, exciting bits of art, made from a few bits of scrap glass. The designs are good too.

The patterns use overlays, wire, beads and soldering to achieve stunning results with very little work. There are 34 different designs, each with plenty of instruction to help achieve the author's clever effects simply and eaily.

If you work with sun catchers, this is a MUST HAVE.

A feast of Christmas Designs for Tree Decorations and Light Catchers, including reindeer, snow men, Father Christmases, doves, candy sticks, trees, Mouse, Mary and Jesus, Nativity, Candles, Menorah, Parcel, St Nicholas, many Angels, Bells, Gingerbread man, penguin, etc.

Although this is a pattern book, rather than a how-to book, there are many tips for dealing with details. Most of the patterns are straightforward but there is plenty of scope as well for the more adventurous.

Althought the reindeer pictured is my favourite there is also a good choice of Father Christmas designs that gave it competition.

A Few Marine Models

This is Brady's first book. He has a wealth of ideas on 3D models and certainly makes them beautifully.

In this book based on sea going yachts and a light house there are six patterns.

The glass cutting skills required do not look too difficult at all, but you are going to need plenty of patience in the assembly department. Do not be alarmed by that. Brady gives copious and detailed instructions for building these models.

The drawings and photos with the instructions take you through every step. There are tips on working in 3D, with the wire, and other bits of material you may choose.

Thoroughly recommended for a stained glass artist interested in sea boats.

This is another one of those excellent CKE publications for stained glass artists trying to find some good projects for the scraps box.

The projects are mostly very easy with some excellent ideas, such as the business card holder shown here. There are VERY GOOD instructions on making card holders, boxes, etc.

DRAGON WINGS and Faerie Things

This is the third "Faeries" book from this author. She produces fantastically delicate designs which certainly suit fantasy dragons etc.

The detail of the dragon shown above is from the interpretation of one of Jillian's designs by Belinda Richardson, showing what can be done. Its a stunning picture.

Other dragons and figures in the book tend to be a little childish, but the book still provides excellent inspiration if you are into fairies, goblins and dragons.

Another good book from Carolyn Kyle with thirty full size (A4) patterns and colour prints (smaller) of them all.

A good range of designs although the animal designs tend to be for children. The rooster, although also childish is excellent.

The shoes are exceptional designs.

This is another book where the projects are very detailed and will take a lot of work.  The results should be stunning, I don't think that photographs can do them justice.  My favourite design, a detail of which is shown here, is the Humming Bird number 4...or maybe I prefer number 3!

The book has 12 patterns, but just three themes, butterflies, humming birds and chickadees.  There are full colour plates of each pattern, and a detailed layout design grid for making your templates.  There are also fully detailed and illustrated assembly instructions, including those for a jig (which you will have to make).  If you want to make stunning light catchers to knock every one else's into a cocked hat, you will have to have a go at these.
